Seng Kee Black Chicken Herbal Soup @ Junction of Jln Masjid and Changi Rd (opp Shell petrol station)

Never mind that its signboard says Seng Kee Black Chicken Herbal Soup, this stall is actually more popular for its seafood.  In fact, the owner Mr Lee Thiam Hock, said that four years ago when he started, it was to sell black chicken soup, but over time customers mostly prefer his seafood.  There is no printed menu and choice of food and cooking style are left to customers, who dine under the stars, along the road just outside the stall. You can choose from a wide selection of fish, all on display, ranging from $6 for red snapper to $30 for threadfin.  Basically, any style also can!  They’ve also on display some of their other dishes, which look really yummy like their deep fried toufu dish with toppings and deep fried ‘hei-cho’ (shrimp & meat rolls).

Unfortunately, we only saw the display after ordering, solely relying on the waitress’ recommendations and what we saw others having.  It seems everyone was having the mee-suah in tonic soup with choice of pig innards or pork ribs so Shareen had that.  We also ordered the claypot sesame oil chicken, sambal kangkong and lotus soup with pork ribs.  While the lotus soup was nothing to shout about, the sambal kangkong was one of the best I’ve ever had.  Not so spicy sambal with ‘hei-bee’ (dried shrimps) coating every leaf and still crunchy!  Very tasty!  The sauce in the claypot sesame oil chicken was amazing and great with rice.  Generous meaty and tender chicken serving, this dish is perfect on its own!  As for the mee-suah soup, it was something unique in a good way with a distinct tonic and pork taste that has been very well blended.

Seng Kee Black Chicken Herbal Soup Parking is open from 5pm to 4am daily and parking along Changi Road is free after 5pm from Monday to Saturday and all day on Sundays and public holidays.  Very convenient!

Tai Hoe Ee Chicken Rice and Cze Cha @ 399 Balestier Rd

This place is hard to beat, cause’ it has all my favourites in 1 place! Top-notch chicken rice (they are a division of Boon Tong Kee), good Cze Cha and you can order the Bak Kuh Teh (pork rib soup) from next door!

The chicken rice is always a must have! The chicken is incredibly smooth and juicy, and you can order a few homestyle Cantonese dishes to go with it. The claypot beancurd with roast pork and seafood is yummy! The sauce is thick, and perfect for pouring all over the fragrant chicken rice! The spinach with 3 types of eggs is done well too.

For Bah kut teh fans, order your pork rib soup from next door. It’s clear and light broth with tender pork ribs but has a nice peppery taste.

Oh if you have problems finding a parking space, there’s a small public carpark behind.

10.30am-5am. Great supper place!

Original Popular Hock Lam St Beef Noodles @ 22 China St, #01-01 Far East Square

Sticky beef noodles are really not my thing, so I chose the soup version. The beef slices were tender and the soup a lovely beefy flavor.

Sebastian who tried the sticky version found the sauce delicious. Almost like a thick version of beef broth with crunchy crushed peanuts to top it off.

Shareen opts for soup...

while Sebastian goes dry!

Popular with the working crowd.  In fact the stall is now run by the daughter of the owner who’s determined to continue her Dad’s legacy.

Thumbs up for that!

11am to 8pm Mondays to Fridays, 11am to 5pm on weekends.

Hung Kang Fish Porridge (Bedok) @ Blk 16 Bedok South Road (Market/Food Centre) #01-181

I rank this at the pinnacle of therapeutic food.  For me, it doesn’t get any healthier than this.  Offering you a choice of fish porridge, fish or mixed seafood soup with rice, this stall uses very fresh fish slices (‘Loei He’ or snakehead) and seafood.  I went for the works…mixed seafood soup with rice.  It’s all my favorite seafood in a light, seafood-sweetened soup (believe there’s no MSG) that is extremely tasty!  Imagine, they start business at 11am so by the time you get there for dinner, the seafood essence boiled into the soup is amazing!

All that seafood for only $3!

All natural and best thing is it’s not overly fishy.  It’s actually one of the few soups then you actually feel really good drinking slurping it all up.  In the soup is a whole load of ingredients!  Seaweed, green vegetables, tomatoes, ‘sotong’ (squid) and fish slices and shelled prawns (medium-sized)!  All that for only $3!  Extremely good value for such great comfort food!  Open daily except for alternate Wednesdays till 11pm.

Newton Circus Chao Guo Tiao @ Serangoon Garden Market & Food Center, Stall 46

Serangoon Garden Market & Food Center recently opened after undergoing a facelift.  Thankfully, this crowd-puller stall did not take his business away.  Despite its name, this stall is at the corner of the Serangoon Garden Market & Food Center just opposite the famous ‘Chomp-Chomp’.  An elderly couple runs the stall from about noon to 9pm daily except Mondays.

Expect a queue especially at lunchtime but it’s worth the wait!  $2 will get you the smallest serving while the biggest is just $4!  Power Cruisin’ had the biggest serving, putting full trust in the tip-off we got that this stall served one of the best ‘Chao Guo Tiao’ in Singapore!  For $4, you get 3 medium sized fresh prawns, Taiwanese dried sausages, fish cake, sotong (squids) and beware…it is ‘harmful’ (lots of cockles)!  Egg-y enough with just the right amount of dark sweet sauce, the noodles are fried just right and very very yummy!  Every mouthful leaves you more eager for the next spoonful!  Well worth the money, wait and definitely the trip there.  Must try!

Fu Ji Shao La Shi Pin @ 206 Syed Alwi Road

One of Singapore’s better roasted meats can be found in this little inconspicuous stall along Syed Alwi Road!  At unit 206, you will find all your favorite roasted meats like ‘Char Siew’ (BBQ pork), ‘Sio Bak’ (roasted pork), roasted duck and even soy sauce chicken.  Included in the menu is also a selection of great soups to wash it all down and let you feel you’re eating healthy.

Power Cruisin’ was there to sample the works and we weren’t disappointed.  The meats were well barbequed with yummy seasoning while staying tender and juicy with every bite.  The best part is the accompanying gravy, which is amazing!  Thickened just right, it is very tasty and though it goes well with rice, it achieves perfection with the hor fun!  We had the watercress soup which was naturally flavorful and importantly, not oily.  In fact, taking the soup is almost therapeutic as we slurped up everything to the last drop!

Lim Joon Hin Eating House @ 715 Havelock Road

A good supper place if you’re looking for variety at a reasonable price.  Cool thing is that this place is open till 4am, serving up piping hot Teochew porridge!  A favorite haunt of the after party crowd, you can choose either rice or porridge and you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice when it comes to ordering your accompanying side dishes.  From my favorite spicy minced pork, soy sauce duck, belly pork, salted vegetables, fried bean curd skin, fried and steamed fish plus eggs cooked in different styles!  The dishes are served fresh and hot, which is a good thing especially at 3 in the morning!  For refreshments, choose the homemade barley to be served either hot or cold.

Some famous celebrities have checked this place out including Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau so it’s gotta be good!  Reasonable prices, good variety and definitely solves the problem of looking for food after hitting the pubs!

Xiang Ji Ruo Cuo Mian @ Bedok North Hawker Center (opp Bedok Police Station) #01-07

This is the legendary minced meat noodles!  Open only from the evenings around 6pm, they dish out continuously bowls and bowls of piping hot minced meat noodles in soup till the wee hours of the morning!

A favorite haunt of after party revelers and supper lovers, be prepared to wait for almost half an hour during the peak hours!  However, when your order finally arrives, it’s all worth it.  From the moment the server lays your bowl on the table till the last tablespoon of soup you slurp, it’s an experience that will leave you wanting for more!

Makan time!  Cannot wait already!

From just $3 for the smallest bowl, it’s enough for a one-person supper quickie!  You can also order more meatballs or just meatballs in the super flavorful minced pork soup!  You can choose either ‘mee-kia’, ‘mee-pok’ or ‘kway teow’ as the staple.  The killer thing here is the soup that has been boiled continuously for hours and as such, captures all the essence of the minced pork.  It is extremely yummy and floating in the soup is a generous serving of minced pork!  The sliced red chili and spring onion garnishing all do their little part to make you want to finish every drop of soup!  Minced meat, 5-6 meatballs and noodles in soup!

Sheer delight for only $3!  This stall only has the soup version but just beside it is another that has the dry version.  You might be tempted to try the dry version but don’t!  It doesn’t even come close and you will be sorely disappointed!  The original renowned one is the stall that has only the soup version.  Don’t be tricked!

Hainanese Delicacy @ #05-116 Far East Plaza

I’ve been hearing about this chicken rice stall for some time now. In fact a Power 98 listener recommended it!

It was packed with a lunch crowd with people waiting around for a seat. The chicken is above average but could be smoother. The rice though was disappointing. Not as flavorsome as we had hoped.

However the salted vegetable duck soup more than made up for it! It wasn’t too sour or salty, just nice with a good helping of duck meat and soft salted vegetables. The vegetables with oyster sauce were a nice addition to the meal.

Would return for the duck soup and the convenient location.

Golden Mile Claypot Rice @ Golden Mile Food Center, #01-65

This is one of the most fragrant claypot chicken rice I’ve ever had!  I could smell my food coming!  The next thing that caught my eye was the size of the claypot!  I ordered for one but it sure looked like it could feed three!  On first glance, it was the standard fare where you have to mix it all up yourself to make sure the sauce is evenly spread and coating every grain of rice.  The more I stirred, the hungrier I got cause the fragrance was just so yummy!

That’s thanks to the small chunks of salted fish that has been added into the rice.  Fragrance aside, the salted fish also complemented the dish by adding more flavor to the rice!  Chicken pieces were chunky, not bony and not just bland breast meat.  Good mix and the pieces were still tender and retained most of its juices.  The dried Taiwanese sausage and big mushrooms made it event better.  Do look out for the accompanying homemade, customized, special chili dip and ask for extra when you order cause I guarantee you’re gonna need it and you can save the stall owner an extra trip!

All that for just $5, this is good stuff!  Open from 5pm to 10pm daily.  Closed on Wednesday.

Yi Sheng Hokkien Mee @ Blk 6 Jalan Bukit Merah, ABC Market, #01-4566

One look at this stall and you would never be able to guess that it serves up a killer plate of hokkien mee. Unlike other stall holders who love displaying their many accolades, and newspaper cuttings, this stall holder chooses to keep a low profile.

However one taste of their hokkien mee that is dripping of prawn stock gravy and you are strangely addicted. Mix in their fragrant chili paste and it brings out the flavour of the noodles even more!

Noodles are tasty & kept nice and moist with enough gravy and a good helping of seafood. Could be more fragrant though! But great for supper and while you’re there, try the fishball soup from the stall across (just the fishballs will do, the noodles are nothing to shout about).

Shareen just couldn't wait!

Half eaten hokkien noodles!  Result of Shareen's impatience...

Open daily from 6pm to 1am. Closed on Thursdays.

Bedok North Fried Oyster and Carrot Cake @ Bedok North (opp Bedok Police Station), #01-51

There’s more to this hawker center than the famous ‘bak chor mee’ aka minced pork noodles.  Facing the main road, it is obvious what their specialty is.  They serve probably one of the better ‘or-luaks’ in Singapore!  Using just the right mix of cornstarch, eggs and oysters, the end product is crispy and tasty.

The pieces are bigger, great texture and not mashed up and mushy like other stalls.  Starting from $3 for the smallest serving, it is just enough for 2 persons.  The oysters are not stale and just the right size (not frighteningly large).  The only letdown is the accompanying chili dip but the or-luak itself has a tinge of spiciness already so unless you’re hardcore chili eater, this is definitely good enough for you!

One of the best 'Or Luak' in Singapore!

126 Eating House @ 126 Sims Avenue

Tucked away in the middle of Geylang is proof that you will never go hungry in the east!  Here lies the answer to your midnight cravings for great deep fried dim sum (Open 24 hours)!  The variety offered at 126 Eating House is amazing!  You will be spoilt for choice.  Though they serve the steamed varieties as well, their deep fried stuff is the one to rave about!  Priced between $2 to $4 per serving, the must-trys include the ‘Fu Pei Kween’ or deep fried beancurd skin wrapped prawn filling.  Crispy and tasty on the outside while the whole prawn filling inside is fresh and juicy.  The spring rolls also have a nice filling and are freshly fried.  Check out also the deep fried battered scallops, which are great value for money!

If you got to have some steamed dishes, try the ‘kong bak pao’ or stewed belly pork wrapped in dough.  Falling a little short on the gravy, the unique cut of the pork and its flavor makes up for it.  Emphasizing on their variety, 126 Eating House even has fried chicken wings, which are fairly tasty considering you don’t expect this dish in a dim sum place.

Seb taking the better deep fried varieties...

Shareen knows gluttony is one of the 7 sins...

One of the good things about 126 Eating House is their repertoire of home made drinks.  The barley, served in a unique plastic take-away container is sheer heaven.  With the definite home-made taste and use of ‘tang kueh’ or dried sweetened winter melon pieces, the barley deserves seconds!  Their porridge also seems very well received by the patrons so it’s another dish to check out at any time of the day or night…to your convenience!

Fei Zai Xiang Shao La @ Redhill Lane, #01-113 (next to Redhill MRT)

For lovely honey glazed BBQ pork (char siew), check out this place! It also serves roasted pork and duck as well, although they are currently resting the ducks (due to the high costs)

Have it with your choice of noodles or rice, the BBQ pork is a little fatty which makes it really juicy, tender and very tasty! Well marinated, not too sweet, and the chargrilled bits stay slightly crispy. I’m usually a roast pork fan, but one bite of the BBQ pork, I was fighting Sebastian for the last piece!

Open for lunch and dinner or till they sell out which is usually about 8pm! Closed on Mondays.

Chai Chee Minced Meat Noodle @ 376 East Coast Road (opp Caltex station)

This is a great discovery!  While the minced meat noodle place in Bedok North specializes in the soup version, this place takes the hat for the soup version.  The best part of this place is that it is open 24 hours!  Chai Chee Minced Meat Noodle joins the ranks of noodle stalls with superb sauce and seasoning for the noodles.  The ingredients with the noodles score high on quality and quantity as well.  At just $3 a bowl only, there is enough ingredients so you can have a mouthful of minced meat, mushrooms and vegetables with every spoonful of noodles!  The sprinkling of crispy salted fish adds that special touch to the dish and you can also ask for deep fried pork lard (for the sinful)!

The best Dry Bak Chor Mee!

Try their side dishes, which include deep fried wanton, water chestnut toufu, minced meat toufu and oyster vegetables.  Each side dish is only $2!  Drinks like water chestnut juice and fresh lime juice go at only $1 so a complete meal that is certain to stuff you will set you back the most $6!  Great value, great food!

Foo Chow Fishball Noodles (formerly @ corner of Beach Rd) 33-35 Sultan Gate

My mum used to take me here. I was in love with the fishballs cause’ I thought “wow” the best of both worlds, there’s meat in there as well!

So many years later, I returned to find that they’ve moved, a little further down the lane.

All the old photos, the newspaper cut-ups are still there, and business seems brisk! I ordered the Foo Chow Special, which means a combination of fishballs, wantons and fishcake in soup, with a plate of noodles.

The sauce for the noodles was tasty. Think its down to the home made chili paste that’s for sale as well! The fishballs were soft and bouncy and the minced meat well marinated.

Memories all coming back for Shareen!

Sebastian with his ingredient overloaded wanton noodles!

We also tried the rice wine chicken soup, which was most unusual. Pieces of chicken cooked in rice wine and other sauces. The soup is a very thick broth, I enjoyed the first few spoonfuls, but couldn’t imagine eating an entire bowl of noodles with the soup. Its one of those things you either love of hate, not much in between.

Overall, lunch brought back some nice memories, and maybe my memory is failing me, but I remembered the balls to be tastier!

Cho Kee Noodles since 1965 @ Old Airport Road Food Centre #01-113D

There’s got to be a reason why this stall’s been dishing out ‘wanton’ noodles since 1965!  A distinct stall plastered with countless reviews and employing technology in an ‘old school’ hawker center, Cho Kee Noodles go from just $2 (a rarity in these times).  The noodles are served in vintage ‘rooster’ porcelain bowls and come with an accompanying bowl of ‘wanton’ soup.

What sets Cho Kee Noodles apart is the special dark seasoning used for the noodles!  It’s definitely not the usual chili sauce, vinegar, oyster sauce mix!  Extremely tasty with every mouthful.  Nice full meaty ‘wantons’ and though the ‘char siew’ (barbequed pork) isn’t as good as the East Coast’s noodles place, the noodles more than make up for it!  The ordering system is definitely something to look out for!  Simply place your order and you will be given a number.  There is an electronic signboard fronting the stall that will ring and flash your number when your noodles are ready!  Talk about going high-tech!

Ah Heng Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee @ Hong Lim Food Centre #02-58

Tucked away in the corner of this town hawker center is a small stall dishing out some of the best curry noodles ever!  Starting at only $3 a bowl, you can feast on a generous serving of potatoes, chunky tender chicken pieces, fish cake and lots of ‘tau pok’!  You can choose from yellow noodles, coarse or thin ‘bee hoon’ to go with the curry.

The best thing about the curry is that they have customized it so that it is not too heavy and overly laden with coconut.  The gravy is thin enough to slurp up every drop yet heavy enough for the rich curry taste.  In fact, it’s almost drifting on to the popular dish ‘laksa’ but it retains the distinct curry flavor!  They’re open from 9am to 5pm.  Good if you seek a heavier breakfast and great for lunch!  However, do beware the office crowd queue.

Niu Ji Prawn Noodles @ Blk 16 Bedok South Road (Market / Food Centre)

If you ever need an icon for fully utilizing resources, this is your man!  Daytime, savor Niu Ji’s prawn noodles starting at only $2 per bowl.  Your choice of bee hoon, yellow noodles or kway teow in a soup, which has prawns and pork ribs, as its base.  The result, a thick, dark and flavorful soup to die for!  You can choose the dry version as well, which will come along with a bowl of soup.  Your $2 will get you 6 medium prawn halves with pork slices.  Non-chili eaters, you will feel short-changed on taste so try to have even just a small dose of chili for the dry version.  You can also choose to add in fried pork lard and fried onions, which though unhealthy, will give it that little more oomph!

By night, Niu Ji dishes out one of the best fried Hokkien prawn noodles in Singapore!  The stall uses the same soup base from morning to fr
