Nasi Padang River Valley @ 54 Zion Road |
This stall is famous! So we thought we’d check it out to see if it’s still as good.
Don’t be confused by the fact that there are 2 Nasi Padang stalls side by side. Look for signs that say “The Original” & all the newspaper cuttings.
The draw here is the wide variety of dishes available. There were at least 4 types of chicken dishes to choose from- Deep-fried, with sambal, in curry, or lemak.
We went for the deep fried, but I reckon I would go for the sambal option the next time. The beef rendang is a must-try, it has a lovely smokey taste and is nice and tender.
They also do big tiger prawns in sambal, squid, fried fish and egg and vegetable dishes. We chose to have sayu lodeh, which looked deceptively bland, but has a lovely lemak taste.
It’s truly earned its reputation as one of the best nasi padang stalls in Singapore!

Mas-Ayu Restaurant @ 63 Upper East Coast Road (opp POSBank) |
This place was a chance find. Open 24 hours, you can be assured of freshly cooked food even in the wee hours of the morning. I had the Nasi Ayam Goreng and it was extremely tasty. There were generous helpings of chunky and juicy chicken pieces. The serving portion was quite large too for the very economical price of $3. For supper, it was definitely enough for 2.
Do try also the fried cuttlefish in batter, which is rumored to be one of their specialties. You will also be satisfied with the beverages available. They serve the classic ‘teh-tarik’ and ‘kopi-tarik’ which are excellent choices for the supper crowd and great to down the yummy main dishes with.
